Crown of Crystal Flame

Hey all... this is just a quick post (deadline is upon me) to let you know what's up.

First, mid January, I found out my current contract (which includes Tairen Soul, The Winter King, and Bel and Gaelen's books) was sold to Avon. So I had a second change of editors and spent a lot of time on the phone with my agent, my new editor (#2) etc. (Her name is Tessa Woodward, BTW, and she sounds just lovely. I'm looking forward to working with her - and with Avon.)

The second thing is, I wanted to let you know that the 5th and final book in the TAIREN SOUL series has undergone a Change of its own. since moving to Avon. The book has a new name. It will now be called CROWN OF CRYSTAL FLAME.

B-but why? Well, basically, the marketing masters at Avon thought CCF would be more appealing to new readers than TAIREN SOUL, since no one who hasn't read the books will know what a Tairen Soul is (which, incidently, is the exact same reason Dorchester changed the name of my manuscript, TAIREN SOUL, to LoFL and LoLS).

Sorry for the confusion. But I'm growing rather fond of the new title, especially considering all the book elements it plays upon - Ellysetta's crown, Soul Quest crystals, tairen flame, and a big surprise.

Third, there is a release date for CCF posted on the online bookstores, but since I promised my readers I wouldn't announce it myself until after I turned the book in, I've been keeping mum on the subject. Once I turn the book in, I'll make an official announcement to everyone on my announcement list - and here on the website.
And now...back to my computer. Ellie has just fallen into the clutches of the evil Vadim Maur. Oh noes!!!!!!

Well, everyone, the new year is here, and with it some exciting news, and great New Year's Resolutions.

King Goes to Germany

As I mentioned before, my publisher sold the German rights to KING OF SWORD AND SKY, and the translation is well under way. The book is currently available for preorder from Amazon.de, the german amazon.com... and just look at the absolutely gorgeous cover they put together.

Tairen Soul Update

I'm finishing up the TAIREN SOUL manuscript, the fifth and final book in Rain & Ellsyetta's story. My goal is to be done and have the MS turned in first of Feb to my new editor, the lovely and talented Leah Hultenschmidt. My first (and much beloved) editor, Alicia Condon, (to whom I dedicated QUEEN) has gone to Kensington to take over as Editorial Director of the Brava line. (Some of you may know the previous Brava Ed Dir, Kate Duffy, passed away last year.) I will miss Alicia. She was a lifesaver on QUEEN. But I'm looking forward to working with Leah.

In any event, as soon as I turn TS in, I'll announce the confirmed release date to members of my Announcement List and post it on my blog, twitter, etc.. New Year's Resolutions

On a personal front, this year is my year for getting control back in basically all aspects of my life. One key place I've decided to start is losing weight and getting in shape.

As an author, especially an slow writing author, much of my day consists of sitting at my computer, typing on my keyboard. I haven't gotten my Dragon Naturally Speaking software to work halfway well enough to dictate a book while walking on a treadmill (and the process of "speaking" a book is sooooooo different than letting the words flow from my fingertips, that I don't know I could successfully do it even if I could get DNS humming), so BICHOK (butt in chair, hands on keyboard) is it for me. Though a required part of my job, the sedentary nature of BICHOK results in a number of not-so-great side effects - like the appearance of increasingly high numbers when I step on my bathroom scale, increasingly wide waistbands in my clothes, bad posture, back pain, and carpal tunnel.

Last Nov, I decided enough was enough. Its time to lose weight and get in shape. Now, I've done all sorts of diets, and lost weight on them too. But I've always gained the weight back--and more. (This is why I hate the term "losing weight". It's never really lost. It always knows exactly where to find me again! And it usually brings friends!!! )

So, as part of my New Year's Resolution to lose weight, get fit, and regain my youthful girlish figure (or at least a not-so-bad-40-something figure), I've joined Weight Watchers online, and asked my DH and kids for a Wii fit for Christmas.

Now, I hate exercise. I hate to sweat and get all icky, sticky, & stinky. Worse, I hate to be bored, and there's nothing more boring to me than running on a treadmill or lifting weights . But I luuuuuurve video games :) Wii Fit is absolutely the perfect melding of exercise and video games. So my sister and I are doing WW online together and playing the Wii version of The Biggest Loser plus Wii Fit (Yoga, etc) and Leslie Sansone's fabulous Walk Away the Pounds.

Let me tell you, Biggest Loser, even on "powder puff" level, kicks my tookis! Sweat? Uh, yeah. I do. But in just 3 days, I'm already 3+ lbs down. Water weight? Some of it. But some is ugly fat. YAY me!

As an Aside

As you can see, I've also discovered smileys for blogs. I'll try not to get too obnoxious with them in future posts. I don't know how to activate smileys for comments - at least not on blogger. If anyone knows how, let me know. I'm trying to figure out how to create a tag cloud as well. I use a custom template for blooger, hosted on my own website, so the "gadgets" available to most blogger-hosted blogs aren't available to me, and I've wasted days trying to track down a solution.

For those of you who have fought the weight loss battle (and it is a battle), what are your tips and tricks for losing weight and keeping it off? Also, have you made any New Year's resolutions you'd be willing to share?

Here Come the Holidays - Updates from CL Wilson

Holiday shopping is at full swing, though thankfully here at the Wilson house, most of the shopping is already done. (Just have to buy the "big gift" for my son and presents for my cousins' children and I'm done! YAY!)

Audio Book Update

LORD OF THE FADING LANDS is now available in audio book (on CD or MP3 download - which is way cheaper than CD, BTW). I've been in contact with the audio company and hope to have a recording snip to play on the website soon, so you can hear what it sounds like.

LADY OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS will also be out in audio this month.

QUEEN Release Prize Update

And for those of you who've been waiting for your QUEEN Countdown and Release Celebration prizes, all but two final prizes went into the post yesterday. (They know me by name at the post office now.) I'll get the last two prizes out next week.

I'm still busily writing away on TAIREN SOUL. Currently having a lot of fun with the Feraz. Gotta love those witches! *gg*

New Dorchester Reader/Author Forums

My publisher, Dorchester Publishing, has revamped their online forums. It's a thread-based communication forums where readers and Dorchester authors can get together online to talk about books.

You can access the forums from the Dorchester Home Page through the "online forums" link at the bottom of the page or directly via http://forums.dorchesterpub.com/. Simply register and click the link in the registration confirmation email to begin posting. And spread the word - the more people who interact on the forums, the more fun and informative the forums can be.

Lord of the Fading Lands Available in Audio Book

The long-awaited release of the audio-recording of LORD OF THE FADING LANDS is finally here. "Now available" updates to Amazon.com, Borders and B&N are in progress, but the book is currently available in CD format from the Dorchester website and in downloadable MP3 format from AudioBookShop.com.

Queen Sightings

Though terribly ill, I went out on Release Day to get the book. I went to to the nearest city with a bookstore, Chico, CA. First I went to Walmart and had no luck, so I went to Barnes and Noble. I was shocked to find out they didn't have a single copy. They had 16 on order, but had no idea when they'd show up. Still determined to get the book that day, I called every bookstore in a 60 mile radius, only to have all of them tell me the same thing: it was on order, but none were in stock. Greatly saddened, I went back to Barnes and Noble and had them order me a copy. It would arrive Thursday.

Queen Sightings!

I bought my "Queen of Song and Soul" the day it hit the stores. Then on Halloween I went to Borders and one of the employees was browsing the book. I asked if she had read the series and she replied "No." I told her about it and she said that she was going to buy the books today. Since it was Halloween, employees had the option of dressing in costume. We took a picture together with the book.

QUEEN Sightings!!

I've been quarantined with the flu for close to a week now (the consequences of living on a campus of germ-ridden college students). It was such a hardship this past week having to miss all my classes and re-read the Tairen Soul novels... :) Unfortunately, yesterday I was still too sick to brave the general public and instead had to enjoy the celebrations on the Cheryl's blog and finished reading King for the umpteenth time. Luckily, today I was fever free and I went straight to our local Bloomington, IL Barnes and Noble. Queen is now resting comfortably on my bookshelf along with Lord, Lady and King. I almost wish I was still sick so I could skip class tomorrow and read the day away...

The night of release day, I check online at my local Borders, Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores (the ones that have websites, anyway). ALL of them say "Not in stock," to my dismay. I figure they just haven't updated the sites yet, as it was the first day, so I decided to go for it anyway. I struck out for the nearest Borders (in Los Angeles, CA), where the computers still say "Not in stock" and the books aren't in the shelves. Thank goodness one of the employees was nice enough to look in the back for me. :)

After a long day I was looking forward to picking up QUEEN at Barnes and Noble. It was around five o'clock and having checked Barnes and Noble on my mobile for QUEEN in its store inventory, it didn't look hopeful. Apparently they didn't have it in stock, but alas, I went any ways, hoping they might have it. Nothing, or so I thought. I scanned the shelves for a few minutes the browsed the romance inventory and finally resorted to asking an attendant (I almost never ask for assistance since I know the store like the back of my palm) However I didn't get that far. A woman right on wheeled up a small cart and on it.. you guessed it. Five fresh copies of Queen, directly from the back to be shelved. I squeed and I pried, seeing as I just couldn't wait until she put them on the shelves, exclaiming, "Oh just the book I was looking for!" She gave me an odd look, but handed me a gleaming copy. I wanted to hug her.

After a rough day of changing sleep schedules for a shift from graveyards back to days, couch buddy Sam I Am and I are back from an uneventful evening trip to Hastings for Queen and ready for a night of reading. QUEEN Sightings!!

Gia at her local Borders (Town Center, Brandon, FL) after a long day at the office.....finds there are only three remaining copies of "Queen of Song and Souls"!!!! All for me!! Muah-ha-ha-ha!!!! ~Gia~

To start the day, I very impatiently waited to get out of work to go shopping. First, we hit Wal-Mart since that was the very first place I ever saw a Tairen Soul book. No luck. So then we go to Schuler's since it's right down the road. No luck there, either. (You could feel the energy coming off me, I wanted this book so bad). We left to go to Barnes and Noble on the Michigan State University Campus ... I ran down the escalator and hustled over to the romance section. Hmmm, every other Tairen Soul book but not Queen.

Thankfully Barnes & Noble is well staffed enough where they can help customers immediately. OHMYGOODNESS!!! The computer said they had it, so we trot back down to the romance section and of course it's not there, since I had JUST looked. So she goes to the back room, and FINALLY, FINALLY comes out with it in her hand. So I am rhapsodizing to her about the series and telling her she has GOT to read them. Then I go to the cashier and tell her how great the books are and she has GOT to read them. Finally, I am the proud owner of a Queen book. All the way home my mom heard "They are SO lucky they had it, if I would have had to make them call every bookstore in Michigan to find my book they would have been sorry, etc. etc. etc."

My husband's morning started extra early this morning, he is active duty and had a formation very early fun army stuff. Anyway being the loving husband he is got up extra early to go check the shelf's at walmart to see if the book was available yet so it would be there waiting for me when I woke up. Alas it was not :( but when he came home from work for lunch we set out on a mission, first to walmart again but alas queen had not made her arrival to the shelves then it was off to borders where I got a coffee and combed the shelf's in horror no book, until a nice lady pushing a book cart asked if she could help me. Please I said Please tell me you have Queen of Song and Souls by C.L. Wilson on there, she began searching her stack it wasn't looking good, then a spine of a book caught my eye on the back of the cart could it be was my search over? YES!!! there it was the book I've been waiting for with as much enthusiasm as I had for the last Harry Potter book. I paid for it and thank goodness my husband was driving because the minute i got in the car i began to read. Now its cold and rainy and I'm turning on the fireplace and curling up on the couch to read.

Just like where I first found the first books, Wallie World (Wal-Mart) happens to be the place I can get books easiest. There are no bookstores close by because I live in the middle of nowhere in a village. But! I called Wallie World at midnight last night and asked if they'd put it out on the floor then, they told me no and I cried myself to sleep. JK. So on my way to class the next day for college, I couldn't run fast enough into the WalMart and find the book section. There she was...her aura gold and brilliant. I skipped to the checkouts and ran to my car. Too bad I couldn't read while driving

Blog Fun!

I thought we could do something different today. Instead of me asking a question, I thought we try a "write what comes next" story. It can be crazy funny, sexy (PG rating max, please), or silly. Here's how it works, I'll start off the story with a brief paragraph that ends on an unfinished sentence. The first person to respond completes my sentence and starts a new one of their own. You can write as much (within reason please) or as little as you like, but be sure to end on an unfinished sentence.

Ready? Let's go. Here's the first part of our story - and where it goes from here is entirely up to you all!

Setting: Dharsa, The Fading Lands
Time: Let's have fun and say it's AFTER Tairen Soul and the end of the new Mage Wars.

Sparks flew as the gleaming steel of two mei'cha scimitars crashed against each other. The swords and the two seasoned Fey warriors wielding them fought a brief battle for dominance, but neither gave quarter.

White teeth flashed beneath cobalt eyes. Belliard vel Jelani stepped back and grinned at his friend, Gaelen vel Serranis. "Not bad, my blade brother. Your footwork could use a little practice though. I nearly had you on that last move."

One black brow arched expressively. "Keep dreaming, vel Jelani." Gaelen slid his mei'cha into its sheath in one smooth motion. "They tell me hope is good for the soul."

Bel laughed, and the pair of them turned to make their way off the Academy's dusty training field. As they neared the entrance to the Warrior's Hall, the doors burst open and a harried young warrior raced out. He skidded to a stop at the sight of them.

"Ser vel Jelani! Ser vel Serranis! Come quick! The Feyreisen needs you. There's a --"

"Tairen's Play" ~ Original Tairen Art Wall Plaque

Sleek, golden Fahreeta and her indulgent mate Torasul tumble playfully through a bright summer sky in Heather Carr's original oil painting, "Tairen's Play". I must say, this is my personal favorite. I love the bright, blue summer sky, the rich golden hue of Fahreeta's fur, the affectionate twining of their tails as they tumble, the soft undertones of outstretched wings gleaming with translucent pinkness in the sun. It's as if Heather lifted the image straight from my imagination and transferred it to canvas.

A digitized rendition of the painting has been reduced to 4"x6" and mounted on a golden-oak stained solid wood plaque suitable for wall display. The full-sized painting will soon be available on Heather's website, http://www.darkparadise.org/Paintings_index/pindex.htm

Imported from China, carved from Aventurine, Jasper, Sodalite, and Goldstone, pocket tairen guard the pride. (Note: the Sodalite appears black in this photograph but is acutally varying shades of blue and white.) The larger editions of the pocket tairen (Sodalite, Green Aventurine, and Jasper) stand approximately 2" x 1" x 1.5". The Goldstone tairen is slightly smaller.

I comb the crystal shops looking for stone tairen. These four I picked up this year from DragonCon. I'll be giving away three this week and the fourth will be part of a "Grand Prize" basket of goodies to celebrate Release Day!

Question of the Day:

My artist friend, Heather Carr, has several other Tairen Art projects in the works including:
A portrait of a tairen family. Does this pose look familiar to you? It should. Rain commissioned Ellysetta's father Sol to carve a tairen matepair in ebonwood and fireoak, and Sol took the liberty of adding a pair of tairen kitlings playing at the feet of the tairen mates. I can't wait to see the color version of this.

And a portrait of Merdrahl's Fire Song. After his mate, Cahlah, died attempting to defend their unhatched young from the mysterious "wasting sickness", the tairen Merdrahl would have suffered the painful, lingering death of mate-loss, but the pride granted him peace and freed the matepair's souls through the fiery funeral rites of the Fire Song.

In the finished piece, a boiling sea of red-orange flames and smoke will wreath Merdrahl.

Heather and I hope to develop a complete series of paintings from the books, so my Question of the Day is the following:

Sleek, golden Fahreeta and her indulgent mate Torasul tumble playfully through a bright summer sky in Heather Carr's original oil painting, "Tairen's Play". I must say, this is my personal favorite. I love the bright, blue summer sky, the rich golden hue of Fahreeta's fur, the affectionate twining of their tails as they tumble, the soft undertones of outstretched wings gleaming with translucent pinkness in the sun. It's as if Heather lifted the image straight from my imagination and transferred it to canvas.
