Updates from the Fading Lands

Well, everyone, the new year 2010 Hat is here, and with it some exciting news, and great New Year's Resolutions.

King Goes to Germany

As I mentioned before, my publisher sold the German rights to KING OF SWORD AND SKY, and the translation is well under way. The book is currently available for preorder from Amazon.de, the german amazon.com... and just look at the absolutely gorgeous cover they put together.

Tairen Soul Update

I'm finishing up the TAIREN SOUL manuscript, the fifth and final book in Rain & Ellsyetta's story. My goal is to be done and have the MS turned in first of Feb to my new editor, the lovely and talented Leah Hultenschmidt. My first (and much beloved) editor, Alicia Condon, (to whom I dedicated QUEEN) has gone to Kensington to take over as Editorial Director of the Brava line. (Some of you may know the previous Brava Ed Dir, Kate Duffy, passed away last year.) I will miss Alicia. She was a lifesaver on QUEEN. But I'm looking forward to working with Leah.

In any event, as soon as I turn TS in, I'll announce the confirmed release date to members of my Announcement List and post it on my blog, twitter, etc.. (If you haven't already joined the announcement list, you can do that on my website, www.clwilson.com on the "Contact C.L. Wilson" page under "Friends of the Fey")

New Year's Resolutions

On a personal front, this year is my year for getting control back in basically all aspects of my life. One key place I've decided to start is losing weight and getting in shape.

As an author, especially an slow writing author, much of my day consists of sitting at my computer, typing on my keyboard. I haven't gotten my Dragon Naturally Speaking software to work halfway well enough to dictate a book while walking on a treadmill (and the process of "speaking" a book is sooooooo different than letting the words flow from my fingertips, that I don't know I could successfully do it even if I could get DNS humming), so BICHOK (butt in chair, hands on keyboard) is it for me. Though a required part of my job, the sedentary nature of BICHOK results in a number of not-so-great side effects - like the appearance of increasingly high numbers when I step on my bathroom scale, increasingly wide waistbands in my clothes, bad posture, back pain, and carpal tunnel.

Last Nov, I decided enough was enough. Its time to lose weight and get in shape. Now, I've done all sorts of diets, and lost weight on them too. But I've always gained the weight back--and more. (This is why I hate the term "losing weight". It's never really lost. It always knows exactly where to find me again! And it usually brings friends!!! Roll )

So, as part of my New Year's Resolution to lose weight, get fit, and regain my youthful girlish figure (or at least a not-so-bad-40-something figure), I've joined Weight Watchers online, and asked my DH and kids for a Wii fit for Christmas.

Now, I hate exercise. I hate to sweat and get all icky, sticky, & stinky. Worse, I hate to be bored, and there's nothing more boring to me than running on a treadmill Treadmill or lifting weights Barbell . But I luuuuuurve video games Gamer :) Wii Fit is absolutely the perfect melding of exercise and video games. So my sister and I are doing WW online together and playing the Wii version of The Biggest Loser plus Wii Fit (Yoga, etc) and Leslie Sansone's fabulous Walk Away the Pounds.

Let me tell you, Biggest Loser, even on "powder puff" level, kicks my tookis! Sweat? Uh, yeah. I do. But in just 3 days, I'm already 3+ lbs down. Water weight? Some of it. But some is ugly fat. YAY me! Aerobics

As an Aside

As you can see, I've also discovered smileys for blogs. I'll try not to get too obnoxious with them in future posts. I don't know how to activate smileys for comments - at least not on blogger. If anyone knows how, let me know. I'm trying to figure out how to create a tag cloud as well. I use a custom template for blooger, hosted on my own website, so the "gadgets" available to most blogger-hosted blogs aren't available to me, and I've wasted days trying to track down a solution.

Question of the Day

For those of you who have fought the weight loss battle (and it is a battle), what are your tips and tricks for losing weight and keeping it off? Also, have you made any New Year's resolutions you'd be willing to share?

Hi Cheryl,

Happy New Year to you as well.

My new year's resolution is to drop at least one dress size as I'd like to be able to wear a UK 14/16 instead of the UK 16/18 that I currently wear.

I don't have specific weight-loss tips, although as part of losing the weight I'm going to cut down on the snacking (or if I do pick then replace the biscuits with fruit or nuts).

Cheryl,

It is definitely a lifelong battle for those of us who have a problem with weight. My mom and I both lost weight 3 years ago (me 50, her 80). I kept 40 off as of this year but she only kept 15 off.

The big difference is that I get on the scale every or every other day and can quickly see if I have a problem. She hates the scale and did not get on it...the weight slowly crept back. She is back on South Beach and I am joining her for what is hopefully the last 30 pounds I will ever get rid of!

Weigh often and hold yourself accountable. I keep looking at the Wii Fit because everyone I know who has one loves it and it is working for them instead of becoming a clothes hanger like most equipment.

Hi Cheryl

Happy New Year and good luck with your resolutions.

I have lost 10 lbs over the past few months by cutting out sugar. Tha includes all teh hidden ones like honey in your coffee, white rice, white breads, white pasta, bananas, apples and switching to eating berries, only whole wheat carbs and not putting any sugar in my coffee.

I have 8 more to go. I hope to be done by summer.

Great suggestions you guys!! Thanks bunches :) Yay for you, Kathryn on keeping the weight off. It's a tough battle, and one that I've lost several times.

Alas, I see that the scumbag porno posters have found me. I hate having to moderate every comment, but apparently there's no where on the web you can hide from these cockroaches.

So, I'll be going back to fully moderated comments. :( Stupid spammers.

HI Cheryl!

Great new years resolutions! I wish you the best of luck!

My mom lost 80 lbs a few years ago and has kept the majority of it off by keeping to a regular exercise regimen!

Looking forward to hearing about your resolution progress, and also about TS! :)

Cheers!

Hi and Happy New Year! I hope this helps, but I've found that if I don't avoid "bad" things like the plague, I'm less likely to binge on them at weakness. I promise myself a dessert after dinner ONLY. A "good job you made it through the day" reward, but!... only a serving size and it's with something healthy like fruit or nuts. Other than that, going for greens, fruits, whole grains, lean meat, and water to drink for four small meals. Wish you luck and super uber excited to read TS.

Hi Cheryl,
Happy New Year!
I don't know if you will even read this, but I felt compelled to share. I too have ballooned in size. I have spent the last year sitting on my butt in a classroom learning how to be a teacher. I am in a size 24. My husband and I would like to have another baby and according to my doc I have gained so much extra weight that I have stopped my ovaries from ovulating. So on that note, one of my resolutions is to lose weight. I HATE going to the gym. The elliptical makes a sqeaky noise when I am on it bc I am fat....etc. I have went this week to the gym and i plan on keeping it up. As for diet: no cokes(which is southern for anything soda pop), fruit when I want something sweet, and portion control. Hopefully it will work! I wish you all the best! My girlfriends and I are anxiously awaiting Tairen!

Windwanders - good luck w/your own NY Resolution!

broncos - interesting. by all means send it my way. Sounds less like a "life change" diet than a "quick weight loss" plan (and those are effective, though usually much stricter than "life change" diets :)

Ang - pasta and bread is my downfall. i really don't consume tons of sugar. I drink all coffee and tea unsweetened, don't do desserts, don't do sodas. Portion control too...because I don't eat as much salad/fruits/veggies as I should and I know it.

Robin - YAY for your mom! :) Thanks for coming out.

Alexandra - Thanks for the tips :) I have to have an occasional "bad thing" just so diets don't feel like a lifetime prison sentence. That's one of the reasons I like the new Weight Watchers system - it lets you know how much things "cost" so if you want to slip in a serving of...oh, say Pad Thai...you can! They've even offered candy (a couple of heshey's kisses, milky way bars, etc) but though I bought the candy for the meal plan, I haven't eaten it.

Aholmes4u - I do read the comments :) I read all my mail and all my blog comments :) Big hugs on the weight gain and the effect it's had on baby-plans. If you're on weight watchers online, come friend me, and we can cheer each other on. (or we can do it off line privately, if you like. Just send me an email off-blog. My email is on my website under "Friends of the Fey" menu.)

Hey Cheryl,
Happy New Year :)
I lost my weight using Herbalife products. They are fabulous, they work, and you don't have to hit the gym if you don't want to. I also found that if I don't stop myself from having something I want, I do a lot better. So instead of telling myself "no" I simply eat what it is I want in much smaller portions.

LOVE the German cover! It's beautiful and I know you must be really pleased. I, too, have the Wii fit, but mostly it just sits under the TV. I've pretty much given up on all of that. I figure I have my place - you know, "there but for the grace of God go I" kind of place. I was listening to a nutritionist on the radio on my way home (her name escapes me - Christine something I think) and she said said to check nutritional labels and avoid anything with more than 10 grams of sugar (or was it fat?) per serving. So I wish you and everyone else well. I'll be cheering you on from my hollowed out spot on the couch.

Stephanie - I've never tried Herbalife weight loss. I did have a friend (and a sister, too) be very successful on Nutrisystem, but as with most diets, they eventually put the weight back on. :(

I'm totally with you on not giving up everything you love. That's a recipe for failure, so far as I'm concerned. What I need to figure out is how to work the things I love into my diet and still lose weight. So for me, for now, it's learning the trade offs :) weigh in is tomorrow, so I'll post my lost (us, temporarily evaded) pounds :)

Ang - ooooh....naan! YUM! I didn't know about the B6...will have to give that a try :)

Maibeeme - I haven't tried it all yet... just the yoga (which is Waaaaay harder than it looks!!!) but my sister loves the "skiing". :)

And I adore that cover. ADORE :)

Hi Cheyrl,

After having three children I too have had to battle with my weight. (weve corresponded about the subject before) :) After having my third child I actually gained a bunch of weight and went over the 200lb mark, I looked at myself and I just wasnt happy. The day i stepped on the scale was april 17, 2009 and when it read 204 i broke down and had a good cry. What was happening. The first thing I did was to go in and have my Thyroid tested, I was previously diagnosed with it, but didnt feel any of the usual indicators it turned out that my medication needed to be increased.
You are so right about the pounds coming back and bringing a few friends i had lost weight before but it always came back and then some.
Once my medicine was on track i took a week and evaluated my diet I kept a diet journal and wrote down everything I ate and every calorie that was in it.
little did i know i was consuming nearly 2800 calories a day, I immediately took action and started counting everthing averaging 1700 calories a day.
as far as exercise goes i dont like sweating either but i do mild calisthenics five days a week for 20 min. Since that fateful day I have lost 60 lbs I weigh in once a week so when i gain a few i work extra to push them off again. and of course i gained my holiday five.

My new years resolution this year is to lose 20 more lbs and build my cardiovascular fitness. Being an asthmatic i have issues with running. Ive decided this year to find a way to work on my heart health. Heart problems run in my family and i want to live a long and healthy life. Not to mention I have a sister in GA who is in the AF and also teaches a spin class thats hardcore stuff, im not there yet but id like to be some day.
I am sure you have already done this but I suggest getting your thyroid function test done. Also there is a device out there called body bugg as seen on biggest loser I love that show!! It will measure your caloric burn and you input your calories in in the program and it shows you what your taking in vs what your burning, it takes burning 3000 calories to lose a lb.

Good luck to you and you have my email if you have any other questions.

Glad to hear that Tairen Soul is almost done:) and Good luck with your attempts to lose weight. I've always had issues with it too. I find that workouts yes, but making a point to walk places instead of taking a car, or take the stairs when you can helps out immensely. Before I came to university i was fighting a losing battle (because I have a thyroid condition that makes it difficult to lose weight) but now that I'm more active I'm better!
P.S-My plaques came from the Queen contest, they're gorgeous and promimently displayed on my shelf.

Misty - Yep, I have hypothyroidism. Was diagnosed 7 years ago, and now I get checked twice a year by the endocrinologist. I "diet journal" on the weightwatchers online but need a decent pocket sized journal for when I'm not near my computer. Haven't found the perfect solution yet (don't want to pay $15.00 a month for a printed journal, so I'll probably make and print my own.

Cheryl,
Hi and Happy New Year! I have gained and lost the same 40 pounds at least 5 times, so I have become a bit of an expert on the process!
I lost 20 pounds last year and was able to maintain it all year. My goal is to lose another 20 pounds this year in a way that I can also maintain that. My biggest secret is excersize - I try to do something at least 4 times a week, whether it is weight lifting or cardio.

The other thing I have found is that I cannot stay on a diet for life. I have to make lifetime changes to the way I eat - adding veggies and fruits to my day, drinking water and eating more lean protein. Yes, I can count calories for a period of time to lose the weight, but then I have to be allowed to have the foods I love in moderation.
No real insight for you here, but hopefully the acknowledgement of what you already know helps you stick to your goals!
Good luck!

Oh, my! I've lost and gained the same 50 pounds more times than I want to admit. And always, I make the mistake of thinking, OK, now that I'm at somewhat of an average weight, I can eat like a normal person.

Wrong. My "I'm full" switch never seems to kick in. Food is the tiger I'll have to take out of the cage three times a day for the rest of my life. I'll never be able to eat like a normal person. I'll always have to keep the tiger in check.

But I do plan to find and maintain a healthier weight this year. And unlike you, CL, my treadmill time is my reward for finishing my daily page count. I don't find it boring. I turn on HGTV and go!

I can relate to you there, Hypothyroidism makes it so difficult to loose the excess baggage its like you have to work doubly hard to loose a pound and if you even look at a piece of chocolate cake you gain a pound -_-
Best of luck to you, I know you can do it!

Cheryl,

I've always had a problem with my weight. I've never been a "normal" size. Last May I decided to really make a go at loosing all the extra weight.
I tried the Alli program (the previous prescription that you can now take over the counter). It is FDA approved and works well. I've lost a total of 55 lbs (even through the holidays!) by taking Alli regularly and doing moderate exercise (I walk my dog about 1-2 miles a day in good weather).
You do have to be a little more conscious of what you eat to avoid side effects but I have not had a single problem. I eat Cheerios for breakfast with some fruit and then I normally have a "SmartOnes" meal for lunch (weight watchers low cal meals - actually taste good and have some flavor!) and then I have a sensible dinner. I didn't cut anything out per se, but I am careful about what I eat and how much.
Good Luck, and I can't wait for Tairen Soul!

Lisa - your tips sound like exactly the only sort of plan that works. I have never been, nor will ever be a size 3 or smaller. Even at my skinniest (starving myself, hungry all the time, but physically in great shape) I was a size 5 and 10-15 lbs over the "you should weigh X" weight quoted on body charts. (And not because I had 10-15lbs of excess fat on me)

Whatever I end up at, I need to be happy. Finding that magical weight and lifestyle is the quest I'm on now :)

Emily - LOL. My "I'm full" switch is a tighter belt! *gg* Maybe if there was a TV in front of my treadmill, I'd feel better about it. (ha!)

Misty - I can just THINK about Godiva and gain a lb! And the DH chows down and is still skinny. Grrr!!! :) I think activity is going to be my key.

Lupara - I tried Alli but didn't like the way it made me feel. But WOW for you and your weight loss. Way to go!!!

Good-morning Cheryl!

I've tried numerous diets - including weight watchers, bernstein, atkins, the zone, south beach, etc.. I have a several medical issues that makes it REALLY hard to lose weight. It's going to sound too easy - but honestly I lost the most weight by more or less following the Canadian Diabetic diet (it's different than the US pyramid. Look it up. Basically, some protein each meal, eat yogurt, fruit for snacks. Cheated from the diet by always saving a carb from one of the meals for a late night snacks (like a piece of pie, or cake) - Lost 45 pounds and I didnt feel hungry. Cheated - by filling up on unlimited salad/veggies/and dips-hummas, bruschetta, bread dipping mixes etc..Ate VERY intense flavours like berries, an ounce of dark chocolate, and sharp cheeses and including crunchy foods like nuts in salad etc.. the rule is that if you eat every 2-3 hours you NEVER feel hungry. Hungry means sugars are dropping. Try to just start with that -eat SOMETHING every couple of hours and keep it strong flavour.

Good Luck

Great tips Helena!!!

Jackie - the time of eating (at night) makes a big difference. I tried one diet which said, don't eat sweet foods (fruits, sugars, etc) within 5 hrs of bedtime and don't eat anything within 2 hours. I'm not great about it still, but try to remain somewhat conscientious about WHEN I eat as much as WHAT I eat.

Hi Cheryl,
Happy New Years!

I have read book 4 and am patiently waiting for 5..(not!) lol.
But I have started going to the gym too, and the Wii is awesome, it doesnt matter what game i play i break a sweat. But I pack snacks with me and that help soo much. Remember you body needs energy to burn energy, sooo i take salad bags to work, tomatoes, carrots etc.. and use dips like lite ranch and i calorie count and set a goal for 1600 cals a day, and make the most of the cal intake. ex: 4 cups of spinach is 20 cals.. so that helps, i dont feel hungry and since love snacks I sneak in health ones. But youll do great!!

I think what has worked for me is to change my resolution from "I'll be perfect at this from day one of my diet" to "I resolve to make at least one small change every day". So I started parking at the far end of the parking lot, instead of looking for something next to the door. This past week I've started getting up 30 minutes earlier to walk the dog every day (that one doesn't feel small, but let's pretend).

I think Weight Watchers helps with this next bit, since they let you "cheat", but I also try to be accepting that I won't be perfect. Don't let slip ups be full stops. Accept them, and keep moving.

Would love to hear more on Wii Fit. Have started to stare at it myself...

Due to heart failure on top of breast cancer, weight loss has become a "must do". Eating a "Heart Healthy" diet combined with mild exercise and journalling what I eat seems to be working for me. I eat what I like, but make substitutions such as whole grain pasta and breads, cooking spray instead of oil, turkey sausage instead of pork, raw almonds instead of chips for a crunchy snack, etc. I used to be big on convenience foods, but now cook as much as possible from scratch to avoid added salt. I also go ahead and buy fruits and vegetables that are already cut up so they are easy to grab when hungry rather than a cracker or chip. I've lost 16 lbs. -- only 44 more to go to be where I'd like to be. Oh, and I love Wii Fit, too!

Happy New Year to you and yours!!! I love the German cover and am so excited to learn that #5 is almost done. I feel your pain in regard to the weight loss. I have the world's most atrocious eating habits so I know that does not help and many times, I just forget to eat because everytime I do, it tears me up. Also this past year was a huge stress time for me and before I knew it, I was almost weighing as much as our grown sons. I saw this program and have just started it called Food Lovers Program. No dieting allowed. It is a life makeover since it teaches you portion control, how to eat right and how to get your body in a fat burning mode. Believe it or not, I am having a very hard time because you have to eat like 5 times a day and at certain times. I like it because it teaches you to correct all your bad food eating habits. There is a 21 day version but I am being gungho and starting a 6 day fast first. I have to tell - I would kill for a cup of coffee right now LOL.
Surfside Playhouse in CB is having auditions for HAIR the beginning of March and that is one of my dream roles so being thinner is my goal so I will look good dancing and whipping my hair around LOL. Also, there is an optional 'nude' scene and I truly do not think I have the guts LOL.

Hi,

I'm also on the weight loss and healthier lifestyle journey. So far I've lost 67 lbs, but I have quite a few more to go..but that's okay.
I hate to exercise too, the elliptical is about the only machine I can stand, but Dance Dance Revolution is very fun. :P

I am not doing anything special, just tracking what I eat and how much I exercise online. The biggest change is that I cook at home a lot more instead of eating out.
I joined Sparkpeople.com in June of 2009, which is a free online program with lots of support groups.

Hello Cheryl,

I thought I would drop by because I recently got a coworker of mine to start reading your books (she's hooked! haha!), and I remembered I hadn't stopped by in a while.

That German cover is AWESOME. I thought for a minute you had a new book (being as how I don't read German), but I really like it. I like how your novels don't have the typical "romance" covers. You know, busty simpering woman, and man with impossibly chiseled body (and impossibly effeminate hair), and a horse. I'm sure you'll knock those Germans dead (in the nicest possibly way).

As for weight...I have the opposite problem. I have been 85 pounds (give or take half of a pound) for the last 14 years or so. It doesn't matter what I do, nothing helps me to gain weight. Most people generally have ill feelings toward me because of my weight, which has never seemed very fair to me. I had stomach problems all throughout my childhood, and finally in my early twenties I had a series of tests done, including a biopsy of my stomach, to try to find out if there was something wrong.

And the doctors all said what people have always told me, "You're fine, but you might want to try eating a little more."

o_O

When I got married, my husband (the amateur chef) decided to fatten me up. He ended up gaining 40 pounds that first year we were married, and my weight didn't change at all. Now he has diabetes and has to watch his carbs. But if I don't get carbs, I get all dizzy and tired. It makes dinnertime very difficult, because we both have such different needs.

But it doesn't matter your body type, you can always benefit from healthy eating, and moderate exercise. So we try to eat healthy. We buy the low-carb, reduced-fat, low-sodium, whats-its. (Which means I try to eat the heavier things when Archie is not around so he doesn't feel bad.)

And we also bought a Wii. That Wii Fit stuff is really cool. But also anytime we can go out together and do stuff, we try to take advantage of that. Playing some tennis, or just playing catch out on the lawn.

Don't give up, because persistence does pay off. Even for me, I'm sure it's just a matter of finding that trigger that tells my body to start storing some stuff.

Hi, Cheryl, I was home in D.C. for a visit when you posted. I had a birthday this week which FURTHER spurred me to go back on the diet I lost 20 lbs on two years ago - in four weeks.

It was called the Six Week Body Makeover 'Michael Thurman?'. Anyway, you take a quiz to determine your body type. They send you a notebook which tells you how food affects YOUR body type and what foods to eat for it.

There is an accelerated weight loss you can do for two weeks. I did it for two weeks because I liked the food and was never hungry.

They say that some people can eat pasta, other - like me - can't. I ate 5 times a day, very very small meals. 3 oz of broiled chicken or beef, my dark greens for me it was mustard greens, and twice a day I got a small baked potato, sweet potato or rice noodles. The way they explain it, pasta is flour pounded down onto flour onto flour so it's really not low carb. I HAVE TO HAVE low carbs for my body type.

I lost.....ten pound in 6 days! 20 lbs in about five weeks. I was never hungry and only got on the treadmill. They said if you exercise you'd lose more.

I've done WW and was successful but got tired of counting. And I'm a former bulimic so the small frequent portions were good for me.

It's taken me 2 years and totally over eating to put it back on. Here's what I've learned. For any weight loss and maintenance to be successful, you must learn to curb your portions. I believe if a person did JUST that and ate more frequently (to keep the metabolism fire stoked) they would lose no matter what regimen they followed. And walking either on road or treadmill.

The key to eating small and frequently is to take a day and cook up a bunch of stuff so you (I) can grab it before I binge.

I wish you the best success for the main reason I need to lose and keep it off. To be healthy.

Looking forward to word on Tairen Soul. LOVE the smilies.
