MORE PRIZES!!!!!!!!

We're into the final week of our countdown!!! To celebrate, I'm adding even more daily prizes to our giveaway, including some gorgeous new artwork from my friend and fabulous wildlife artist, Heather Carr, and a carved stone pocket tairen.

Steli Chakai - original oil

"Steli Chakai" ~ Original Tairen Art Wall Plaque

Heather Carr brings the fierce defender of the Fey'Bahren pride to radiant life in her original oil painting, "Steli Chakai". This gorgeous work of art depects the tairen Steli, fierce chakai of the Fey'Bahren pride, standing in the entrance cavern of the tairen's lair, Fey'Bahren. Subtle pinks, blues, and lavenders grace the underside's of Steli's snowy wings.

A digitized rendition of the painting has been reduced and cropped to 4"x6" and mounted on a black-stained solid wood plaque suitable for wall display. The complete, uncropped painting is available in giclee or original oil-on-canvas from Heather's website, www.darkparadise.org.

Carved Stone Pocket Tairen

Imported from China, carved from Aventurine, Jasper, Sodalite, and Goldstone, pocket tairen guard the pride. (Note: the Sodalite appears black in this photograph but is acutally varying shades of blue and white.) The larger editions of the pocket tairen (Sodalite, Green Aventurine, and Jasper) stand approximately 2" x 1" x 1.5". The Goldstone tairen is slightly smaller.

I comb the crystal shops looking for stone tairen. These four I picked up this year from DragonCon. I'll be giving away three this week and the fourth will be part of a "Grand Prize" basket of goodies to celebrate Release Day!

Daily prizes to be given to winners selected from today's commenters:
(1) autographed poster of LADY OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS
(1) autographed copy of LADY OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS
(2) autographed sets of Tairen Soul collector cards (LORD, LADY, KING & the brand-new absolutely gorgeous QUEEN OF SONG AND SOULS - Card #4 in the series)
(1) small, Goldstone carved stone tairen pocket totem
(1) Tairen art wall plaque, from the original oil painting, "Steli Chakai", by Heather Carr

Hmm, is the Twilight series considered YA? Then that would be one. Also, The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) trilogy. And of course, the Harry Potter books.

My all time favorite YA author is L.J. Smith. I read all of her books when I was younger, but I re-read them today too.

I also LOVE Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series, which is also YA.

PC and Kristin Cast's House of Night series is also really good.

My 16 year old sister and I both read these books and love to discuss them.

The pocket Tairen are also amazing O.O
To answer the question of the day, yes. I love young adult novels. In a previous post, I had to include them in one of my categories, lol.
I believe my three favorite would have to be:
1) Tamora Pierce. Its so hard to choose a specific book or series, but I do enjoy the Immortals Quintet because I love animals so much. I've always been able to imagine myself as Daine.
2) T.A. Barron. Once again, I have to name a series. I love the Seven Songs of Merlin.
3) Stephanie Meyer. I normally don't read anything to do with bloodsucking vampires, but was captivated by this series.
I also love Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, Rowling's Harry Potter, and Paolini's Inheritance series'.

(trueblood) but i don't think i would read any of these to my children (all i have are boys, and i doubt they would want to hear about love and romance from their mother!!)*sigh* what i wouldn't give for a daughter!! :) but i do plan on reading the harry potter series and the chronicles of narnia to my boys.

I frequently purchase YA novels because i find the reading something light to read at night before i crash. My favorite, aside from the twilight series, is the young royals series by Carolyn Meyer. There are 4, but my three favorites are Doomed Queen Anne, Beware Princess Elizabeth, and Mary Bloody Mary. They each show what happened in the court of Henry VIII from a different perspective, particularily Doomed Queen and Bloody Mary, as they follow the same time line, only told from the mistress and the rejected daughters POV respectively.

I love the Harry Potter series. I don't think I've read other YA books.

My teenage daughter is a supernatural YA fan and wants to be a writer. Her favorites include the Casts, Scott Westerfeld, Melissa De La Cruz, and LJ Smith. I introduced her to YA by Kelley Armstrong and Kim Harrison, and she loves those, as well as their adult books.

She read the first three Twilight books but despises the series now. She started His Dark Materials but got bored with it.

I've read the Chronicles of Narnia

I've purchased the Harry Potter series and Maximum Ride series by James Patterson for nieces and nephews.

Read and Love * Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern series. Don't know if that qualifies for YA.

It would seem the majority of my experience with young adult novels is through the eager, excited, confidences of my 16yr old daughter. An experience I treasure and place far above any singular enjoyment I might have from reading the books myself. I have entered the world of the House of Night, Vampire Academy and so many more through the eyes of my daughter! So I suppose, there are circumstances where you can experience the magic of an author with nary a single turn of the page! ~Gia~

I've read lots of YA, honestly don't see much difference between those and others - typically just the amount of sexual content that determines which it is (I think?).

My favorites? (Author)

Tamora Pierce - The Lioness Rampage and Beka Cooper series currently.

JK Rowling - Harry Potter, though just the first five books!

Stephenie Meyer - Twilight Saga, though I prefer the "trilogy"

When I was younger I was a great fan of L. J. Smith's Nightworld and Forbidden Game series, I think book 5 of the Nightworld series was my favourite - I loved reading about the two main characters Rashel and Quinn. It's funny because what I've heard of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series reminds me a bit of some of L. J. Smith's works, although I haven't had a chance to read any of her works.

I also loved Tamara Pierce's Tortall novels (Song of the Lioness sequence, Immortals quartet & Protector of the Small quartet), Barry Hughart's Master Li and Number Ten Ox series and Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel trilogy (the last book of which made me cry because of the ending).

Later on I read some of Garth Nix's books - my favourite of which being the books set in 'the Old Kingdom' the Abhorson trilogy.

I love love love Sherwood Smith's Crown Duel and all the rest of her books set in that world! I love Edith Pattou's East - it is a retelling of the fairy tale East of the Sun, West of the Moon... My third choice would have to be...hmmmm...not Stephanie Meyer's stuff...ugh...the books were poorly written...though the idea and characters were good... not Harry Potter despite being really well written and original, and owned by me, I don't know if they would be on my top three list...not Tolkien's stuff...I got bored with it... hmm... my oh my... deciding on a third choice is difficult... I guess I will pick Jessica Day George's Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow which is yet another retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon that was well done. I would also put Tamora Pierce somewhere in the mix because her Tortall books have made their way onto my shelf :) (see, I'm unable to stop at 3)
...and I don't remember if these are in the YA section or not, but horse books - Doranna Durgin's Changespell series and Kristen Britain's Green Rider Series :P
...I can't help myself, I have a gold library card so I've read several thousand books in the past 7 years or so...and I'm only 24 so that list will get longer and it will be even more difficult for me to narrow down my top choices

Oh, I have several YA books, mostly comprised of series, which makes choosing just one book impossible since so many build upon the first.

I like Tamora Pierce's Tortall series, which is so far made up of some five series of books. Out of the five I think I love the Lioness Quartet the best.

I love the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer.

And I love Alison Croggon's "Books of Pellinor" quartet, which starts with "The Naming".

I used to buy R. L. Stine YA books for my older son, but he's moved on from them. For myeself, I do have to admit to a soft spot for certain YA books, namely YA fantasy books.

My favourite YA authors are:

O. R. Melling, especially her books "The Singing Stone" and "The Chronicles of Faerie"

Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quartet

Llyod Alexander's The Prydain Chronicles

Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series.

I know you only asked for three, but these four are favourites of mine and even though some can be considered children's, I have also seen them shelved as YA and therefore consider them to be YA.

I would have also added Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings, but to me they are in their own special category and transcend any genre boundaries.

BTW, the new prizes look AWESOME!

Stephanie Myers, Sharon Draper (Tears of a Tiger), Terry Brooks- not sure if he's YA, but I have the first three original Shannara books and they are signed; all three are favorites of mine. The Terry Brooks books were bought for me when I was in 4th grade; and they are falling apart. I passed the age for YA some time ago, but I teach 11-18 year olds. I have read quite a few books listed as YA. Most of my students are low reading ability. That means we read together or I read to them.

I have a hard time deciding what should be classified as YA. Both of my kids read well above their age level, so they were reading adult stuff pretty young. Definitely the Harry Potter Series, Maximum Ride and Golden Compass series. I too think the Lord of the Rings is in its own category (and is really classified by the libraries as a pretty advanced read), but that is my all time favorite.

A-ha-ha-ha! I love Young Adult novels. My husband laughs because I can as easily get caught walking by a Young Adult section as walking by the Sci-Fi sections.

I don’t have any children, but I grew up on Young Adult novels. I’m not sure exactly what my three favorite Young Adult novels are, now that I’m an actual adult (and I still read the newer ones). But I will list what my favorites were when I WAS a Young Adult.

Winter of Fire by Sherryl Jordan (ISBN-10: 0590452894, ISBN-13: 978-0590452892)—Here’s the caption from the front of the book: “She’s the light in a world of darkness.” The cover has a young woman wearing a black cloak and a red dress, against a bleak, barren landscape. Thrills to my 12-year-old soul. This book is currently unavailable or out of print, but I have a copy (fresh from the book fair in 1995!), and that’s all that matters.

The Beyond by Jean and Jack Sutton (ISBN-10: 0399200150, ISBN-13: 978-0399200151)—Also out of print, this book I borrowed from my school library, and besides Anne McCaffrey, it was my first hard look at science fiction. Telepathy, telekinesis, the prejudice people feel against others who are different, and a twist at the end! A decade later I bought a copy from eBay, because it is very hard to find.

Children of Time by Deborah Moulton (ISBN-10: 0803706073, ISBN-13: 978-0803706071)—A post-apocalyptic complex society of the future, where children play a pivotal role. A crazy woman collecting children. Time capsules, a Final War, prophecies and tragedy. I actually bought two copies of this book from eBay, and gave one to a friend of mine.

I can’t believe all three of these books are out of print. That’s so sad. They are really really good. I included the ISBNs, in case someone wanted to track these down one day.

And a shout-out to Robin McKinley, Tamora Pierce, and Scott O’Dell.

I'm happy to see Noreen mention O.R. Melling! I love her novels - even if the description of the clothes her heroines wear has become a bit dated. Oh, the hazards of describing fashions in prose!
I also love any and all Robin McKinley novels, and of course I read J.K. Rowling.

However, I am sorry to say I have not kept up with the latest YA trends - I worked at a bookstore in 2005-2006, and was so overwhelmed by the quantity of YA being published that it actually hindered me from discovering any new authors.

I started my hard-core reading on Young Adult novels. My favorite YA books are all by the same author: Madeleine L'Engle.

She has a series, the Time Quartet, (which is actually five books; and when I think about it now is scarishly coincidental with the Tairen Soul Quintet), that details the 'adventures' of the children of a family of massively intelligent scientists; three of the books- A Wind in the Door, A Wrinkle in Time, and Many Waters - are definitely my favorites!!

I really like to read anything. I don't have any certain authors I just buy, but since I am going to be a school teacher, I have been reading alot of young adult fiction. Also, I have to say that I recently found out that the Twilight series was considered 4th grade reading material according to the Accelerated reading program.SO, by that I am considering the Twilight series my Number one favorite! I have read it four times!

The Harry Potter Series, by JK Rowling

The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis ( I had to read this book for one of my college classes, it was wonderful!)

Bridge to Teribitha by Katherine Paterson
I have a question to anyone that might read this blog.... I am interested in reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels. I tried watching True Blood and I really liked it BUT i can't watch it because it is just a little to naughty. Are the books as naughty?

BTW, those little statues are AWESOME!

I most definitely buy YA novels. Since I moved away to college I had to condense my library significantly to fit in a dorm room... So, the three YA novels that stayed with me in the move are:

1. The Hollow Kingdom, Clare B. Dunkle
2. On Fortune's Wheel, Cynthia Voigt
3. Poison Study, Maria V. Snyder

These offer great worlds to escape too after long text book reads. The Tairen Soul series most definitely made the move too. :)

My favorites would be Tamora Pierce's Lioness Quartet. Of those "In the Hand of the Goddess" is my favorite.
I also really enjoy "The Island and the Ring" by Laura Stevenson.
Finally, though I think of it more as Y than YA because I first read it in 4th grade, "Big Tiger and Christian: Their Adventures in Mongolia" by Fritz Mühlenweg.
Apparently, the English version is abridged. The original German was almost 800 pages, whereas the English translation has been cut down to around 500. It's really a shame. I wonder what I'm missing out on as the book is very good. It's out of print, but if you can find a copy at the library, I recommend reading it.
Naturally, I own all these books. :) I think a truly good story is worth rereading no matter what age group it was written for.

Will have to go with authors rather than specific books. I work at a small county library and handle the children/young adult collection. There have been so many wonderful books that have come out recently and there is a great body of work out there. I've read some and skimmed others. Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time plus others in series and Anne of Green Gables are oldies but goodies. Ursula K. LeGuin has written many good books. The recent GIFTS-VOICES-POWERS series was good.
Have read J.K. Rowling, and am still working on the Twilight series.
There are some excellent books that have just come out this year. Authors are tackling some tough questions and telling it like it is. No matter what genre nyou like, there is someone out there writing about it in good YA fiction.

Ooh, the carved Tairens are absolutely lovely!

I worked in the Children's/YA department of my public library for quite a few years, so I kept up with all the latest and tried out the ones that caught my eye.

Hands down, Animorphs by K.A. Applegate is easily my favorite YA series (her Everworld series is quite excellent, as well). I own all 54 volumes, along with all the accompanying spin-offs. It seemed like it was a series written for me, as I had veterinary aspirations for much of my childhood (I guess I started on shifters early, lol).

Anything by Roald Dahl is also included—all his books are so charming and clever and witty—but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be a draw between The BFG and Matilda.

It's so hard to choose just three, but I can't forget Wilson Rawls' Where the Red Fern Grows. It never fails to make me bawl.

This will date me. I bought my boys
IVANHOE,ROB ROY and THE TALISMAN
By Sir Walter Scott. They liked the adventure and I liked the Old English words. Still prefer the King James Version of the Bible.

Personally, I've always loved the Animorphs Series by K. A. Applegate, I fell in love with those a really long time ago when I picked up one by accident at a garage sale. Great series!

My girlfriend made me watch Twilight and when I wasn't too keen on the movie, she made me read the books, so now I'm compated to the glistening Edward all the time, but at least I know who he is now. That series wound up being really great. But I miss Anne Rice's vamps still.

Uhm, a thrid is an anime my girlfriend also got me into called Chobits by CLAMP, those episodes crack me up and the books had great drawings!

I'm going to cheat a little and count series as one book:

1. Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
2. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe series by C. S. Lewis
3. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

So many choices, oh my.

+ Walter Farley's Black Stallion series.
+ Stephanie Meyer, moreso for "The Host" than the "Twilight" series, but Twilight was still a good read.
+ Garth Nix for "The Abhorson" trilogy--can't wait until his newest book comes out.
+ Whomever wrote the "Thoroughbred" series.
+ Likewise with "Unicorns of Balinor"
+ ...another horse book I filled out my library card with my name and bought at a booksale years later from my old school. :3
+ There are two others I can't recall; both were of shapeshifters. One dealt with teens/children that could morph into any animal they could envision [ending up fighting against a beast called "Krool"], and the other of a tiger that could change herself into a human-esque appearance, though with faint stripes and tiger eyes.

So many, and I'm sure there are more. However, my head hurts.

But before I go, I must GUSH over the oil painting [and gag at the price--OHGOD. Could never afford $750 for the 'original' oil painting, even the cheaper one still makes me want to cry]...and do my eyes deceive me? Could the other winged cat on her site be Rainier? xD

I liked the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Louisa May Alcott, and J.D. Fitzgerald.

My kids are still very small and it will be interesting to see if they will like the authors that I read when I was "younger".

I don't have children so I guess I'm in my second childhood. Blue Bloods series, Twilight got me started, and Harry Potter. Most recently, Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy.

Animorphs!

I'm so glad someone mentioned them, because I almost did...but then I thought that might be TOO young, and not enough adult.

Plus, everyone always thought I was lame for reading them.

Wee! I am still trying to get the last books in that series.
