The perfect read? For me that is all about the characters. Usually it involves a male lead that just grabs me. Often some kind of tormented character, someone with a lot of flaws. I don't like goody goody characters. And then through the book you follow their journey. The setting is less important to me. Although I do like a good story as well. And I prefer it if the setting appeals to me. I love to read historical authors for example. Next to your books my personal perfect reads are two books by Sharon Penman set in medieval Britain. The sunne in splendour and Here be dragons. It has all that I find important in books. That rare feeling of not wanting to put it down and not wanting it to end.

My idea of a perfect read is a story that has a good flow of action and mixed with a undying love between the characters. I really like parts of the book where the characters are already in love and ready to save the world. I like a good mix of both, one or the other is boring and does not keep me intrigued. Right now I like the story lines that invovle magic of course and saving the world from evil doing. :)

Hmmm... a "perfect read"... is one that has strong lead characters, an 'epic' storyline, and a romantic feel to it. While ones that end happily give me some nice warm fuzzies, I also enjoy poetic tragedies, too. Hamlet and The Odyssey come to mind, as does T.H. White's "The Once And Future King". Of more recent novels, I loooved Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series...it's one of the only two recent series that my family actually has 2 hardcover sets of! and of course the Fading Lands stories!

A perfect read for me is when a book paints a picture so well, be character, setting, etc., you feel as though you are part of that book. You are the characters, or you can see them in your mind like you are watching a movie. I love when a book grabs me and I can't stop reading. I can't getting anything done because I have to finish the book.

The perfect read is one that you never want to end and that it really pains you to put down. For me I find the charaters play an important role in the perfect read. I love the tormented Alpha male, but the female also needs her flaws too. Also love a good storyline where the couple has to go through many trials and tribulations throughout the story.
BTW love your books C.L.

The perfect read that I enjoy is the characters, and that they are not perfect. I had enjoyed reading George R.R. Martin saga's of "A Song of Ice and Fire" because non of the characters are goody two shoes. It has a good plot as well, with magic, mayhem, control, torture and dragons coming back to life.
I am still waiting on the 5th book. I live in a small town in Tx and have to rely on the local Walmart or go to the nearest town. I still can't find the book. I had enjoyed your last 2 books, and may have to travel to Victoria to get the 3rd book. But it will be worth it because I am looking forward to it. I can always call my sister in Houston to get it for me. She couldn't find the 5th book of George R. R. Martin as well. LOL!!

The perfect read for me is one that catches my attention from the first line and never lets go. Full of emotion, has strong characters, and a plot full of surprises and hurdles. I want to feel that emotional connection with the characters. When they cry, I cry. When they laugh, I laugh.

I usually enjoy historical/scottish themes since I have a family connection.

In paranormal I prefer a theme incorporating wild animals since I am an animal lover.

The perfect read for me is a mixture of characters who are both good and bad as well as a really great plot with tons of action, romance, suspence, and a happily ever after ending (at end of book or series). I know its a it cheesy but I like happily ever after ending. I don't have a perfect setting because I like to read so many different genres that to me there is no perfect setting.

To me a perfect read is a story that grabs me, as well a vivid use of the writer's imagination, but yet keeps it real enough that you could imagine that happening. Those are the stories that I do not want to put my book down, cooking a quick dinner, with my book either in hand or on the counter next to me so I can read in between stirring the food ! 8) That is exactly how I was with Lord. I could not put it down, and my husband laughed at me for weeks cause I would be reading it while cooking. I would just give him the look, and he would stop!! 8)

For me a perfect read contains a strong, sexy hero and a strong, independent heroine. I like a book where the author builds a world that sweeps you into the story and takes you on a journey that you don't want to end.

The perfect read? Why the Tairen Soul series, of course!

But seriously. It has been a long time since I have been so involved with a book. After I finished reading Lord, scenes would play back in my head from it, as if I had watched a movie of it. I have never read a book with writing *that* good before. It was pretty powerful, and definitely got me hooked.

Speaking of which, will these be made into movies? I would go to the theater every day to watch them over and over again. Then I would chew my nails down to nothing waiting for the DVD release. Much like I am waiting for King to be released! ;)

The perfect read....I love a book that is written so perfectly that it is like I am there. It has to have the good vs. evil factor and I prefer a bit of romance, magic and humor. I also love it when it is a series. Sometimes when I read a book, I love the characters so much and I don't want their story to end.

The perfect read would be good writing, good plot, and good pacing, a book that's too rushed or too slow are horrible. There has to be a happy ending. It should also be a long book. The longer the better.

My idea of a perfect read happens when I open up the book and can’t put it down at all. The story literally comes to life in my mind and I can actually imagine or see the scenes as they unfold as I read the story. A perfect read is a book that can stay on my bookshelf for years and when I go back to read it again, gives me the same feeling I had when I first opened it. A perfect read makes me emotional.

I love reading books about strong, alpha men, that has danger, magic in the mix, but I'm not picky whatsoever. I'll read whatever peaks my interest after I read the back cover of the book usually ends up as a keeper for me.

The perfect read is a book with a great adventure from start to finish. Or a book that's so suspenseful you can't stop turning the pages. A perfect read is also one that is well researched. A good theme is historical mystery or suspense. Anything about Scotland makes a good theme. :-)

In my high school film class, I remember learning about a particular director. He would fill every part of his sets with live, working objects: every room, every closet, every drawer. Even though none of this would ever be used on camera, it created subtle layers and richness to his films that were unsurpassed.

The most compelling read is one where the author uses the same elaborate attention to detail to create an entire new world for the story. It should go beyond the typical (and the stereotypical) and combine intricate histories, cultures, languages, and back stories. Characters should be the products of their environments and through them the audience is able to glimpse pieces of this much larger, “behind-the-scenes” world.

The perfect read is a book that is so engaging that I completely forget that reality exists while I'm reading. It is so utterly consuming that I physically can't put it down and even when I'm forced to, I can't get the story out of my head. I don't really care what it's about (although I do love a good romance story, and the more magic there is the better) so long as it makes me forget that I've got homework to do and dishes to wash.

I like to escape and become part of the book, that is the perfect read for me. To be able to feel like I never want to stop reading. The leads: a strong male lead with flaws, but who is also the yummy bad boy! ;) And the female who is equally strong and has her own issues to work through. And the romance of building the relationship.

I like a good story that is different, unconventional, and unpredictable. Most of the books that I enjoy have a nice romance to it with adventure and thrills. Books that are only comprised of romance don’t hold me for very long. The background story is what heightens the romance, makes it more believable. I like fantasy romance novels because they are different and exciting. I really enjoy reading novels by Sara Douglass because you can never predict the outcome. Her characters and world are very developed and they have a real sense of human characteristics and flaws about them. I think the whole language that the fey use in cl wilson’s books are brilliant because it gives a great deal of insight into what type of race they are and it gives the book a little extra flare.

The perfect read for me? A book that blends realistic characters with a realistic storyline would be a must.
The characters would have flaws as well as strong points, and they grow as the story unfolds. I prefer strong male characters, alpha males like the fey, who protect their women out of love not because they believe women are less than them. The women characters need to be a good match, a 'helpmate' as it were, that bring out the best (and worst?) qualities in their men.

The romance between them needs to be believable, and strong, though not 'slutty'.
I hate books where the female lead jumps into bed with the male on just about the first date with no real bond being built between them. I don't connect with that.

The final things is the realism of the story. Granted, I prefer Fantasy, Sci-fi, or paranormal settings to contemporary (escapism?) stories, but if the story is 'realistic' enough to their own world rules, then it doesn't matter the setting.

I love stories, find them to be a perfect reads, when the author spends some time on the world-building, really brings a realism to the location and movements of the characters. That is what caught me with "Lord", "Lady", and now "King" from the start. The world-building was wonderful, so detailed so you could easily visualize it.

I prefer 'series' books to just stand-alone, that way I can see various secondary characters and watch the growth of all the characters over time.

It can be difficult to describe but usually for me, it means I don't want to put the book down, and can't wait for a continuation of the story.

The perfect read is the one that satisfies my need for a book. But, saying that, the ultimate perfect reads (as in the books that become my favorites) is when I feel a glow of happiness shining out from my inner core as I close a book after finishing it. The books that I stay up and finish with a smile, sometimes too excited to sleep. I will think about them for days, and look up web discussions on them, add them to my favorite lists on facebook, etc. They hold a special place in my heart.

I usually like themes about the humanity and goodness coming through in dark times. It does not have to be triumphant, just that it exists. To Kill A Mockingbird, The Book Thief, and Requiem For the Devil are examples of this and all favorites. I do enjoy a good romance, too, but they are usually part of a larger story, mostly in a fantasy setting. I enjoy coming of age novels where a character discovers something about herself and her life changes for the better.

For many, many years, I was a single mother of three. My daily life was full of struggle - job, housework, parenting, cooking, etc....Sometimes I just needed an escape.

Books are far cheaper to buy than a vacation in the Caribbean. Plus I did not have to hire a babysitter to escape to the new lands in my books. I quickly grew a large library of used books from rummage sales, used book stores, and trading with friends and family.

For the last two years I have leaned strongly into the genre of fantasy (initially because I made friends with a woman who had a house full of fantasy novels that she didn't mind sharing). I grew to love the power of magic and happily ever after. It was a way to restore my sanity after a hard day of work.

My perfect read would be one with strong and complex characters that can easily be related to. I like a well thought out plot and storyline. What I love in a good fantasy novel is the creativity authors show with their outlook on the world and what they take from it and change to suit their purposes. For example: Ashlianne instead of Cinderella or the Maidens of Light.
I also enjoy the background info that some writers throw in to their tales in bits and pieces. It makes their world seem almost tangible.
Happy endings and a bit of romance are good to have as well so long as the romance doesn't overpower the plot.

There are "good reads" and then there are "perfect reads". I have quite a few of the former but much less of the latter. The perfect read for me is one that has good characterization, good plot, at least a touch of humour, and if the story calls for it, good action.

The perfect read leaves me wishing that I could go back in time so I could savour and anticipate that "perfect read" over again for the first time.

The perfect read is a book that I can pick up again anytime and despite knowing exactly how it ends, become immersed in it quickly and not be able to stop reading it. It is a book that I may have read even as a child but it's pull is such that I can read it again as an adult and it still retains it's goodness over time. Something about that book speaks to me in a way that is intangible, that is hard to put in words.

Very few books leave me with that feeling. Lord of the Fading Lands and Lady of Light and Shadow are the books that immediately come to mind as my most recent perfect reads. Cheryl thank you for writing them!

My idea of a perfect read is a book, that after setting the background information up, just grabs you and takes you to the setting of the story. A story that as your reading you see the action going on and see the people you are reading about in your mind. It's always amazes me when a great book is made into a movie and the cast and sets really take on the images you are seeing as you read the book. For example, the Harry Potter films, while leaving some information and scenes out, the movies really did match with what I envisioned it; right down to the actors/actresses that portrayed the characters in the book. I really do hope they make films out of these books so I can enjoy them in film almost as much as I do reading, because reading the book gets you much more out the story than just the movie alone.

My perfect read is a very character driven story that immerses you in their world. The only downside about these stories are that they end :)

The perfect read...excellent question. It has to be written so it snags my interest quickly. I have to want to turn that page. I need characters that I can like. If I don't like the character, then I truly don't care what happens to it. That doesn't mean they have to be perfect or wonderful but they have to have something that calls to me. There has to be something going on. Don't just move the characters from point A to point B but have them doing something while moving. Don't throw sex into the book just to have it there. Make it part of the story and have a purpose. Have a plot that goes somewhere. I hate a story that rambles for pages going nowhere. I like a touch of humor but that doesn't fit every book. If I can get an emotional tie with what is going on, it's perfect.

Got my books from Dorchester today and King was in it. It looks good but I already know that the story is better. Great job, Cheryl.

the perfect read ...hmmmm, there are books that are different to each other, pride and prejudice by Jane Austen, one for the money by Janet Evanovich, and Deathstalker by Simon R. Green are brilliant books, 3 of my favourites, they are full of humour, romance, suspense, witty characters, real emotion, real people, and great storylines with brilliant settings but are different. but the one thing they both have is the ability to transport the reader, i feel what they feel, i cry at the pain of the characters, laugh with them and feel joy for them, im so excited when things are going well, and on edge when i'm held in suspense...its like its a movie in my head but its not, like they are comforting memories, making me read the books over and over again as they make me happy. it is pure escapism, the feeling that i just cant put it down. and im happy to say that Nalini Singh, Christine Feehan (Ghostwalker series) and yourself Cherly love have done great in taking me to your worlds...the thing is now i keep hoping i'll wake up in those worlds, lol.

My idea of the perfect read is a book that keeps you so absorbed in the characters and plot that you stay up until 2:00 am just to finish the next chapter to see what's going to happen next. Or a book that makes it hard for you to concentrate on anything else because you want to finish it so bad and you’re constantly imagining the possible scenarios to fix the problem the main character is facing. I usually lean towards fantasy with a little romance mixed in and some brave hero, preferably a female =) that does some courageous act no one else has ever achieved before. I enjoy getting so wrapped up in the characters that the outside world doesn't seem to exist for that short period I’m in my imaginary world.

For me, the perfect read is a book that captures my attention at once. Where the characters come to life off the pages, you can see the places and scenes painted by the author's wonderful descriptions, the story is full of action and emotion. Basically, you never want the book to end.
As for the prefered storylines, I'm not too picky on books but I do know what I like. For me, a tormented, scarred (inside or out)hero is a plus. I like to see the unhappy hero pulled from the depths of desire by his new found love. And for the heroine to be strong inside when she needs to be. Pull her weight in the story and sometimes kick butt when and if the moment arrives. The hero and heroine should both be the one and only healing needed to one another's hearts. A balm to the soul, a anchor to safty to each other, and a calm in the storm of one another's life.

That is a remarkably difficult question to answer. I suppose that the perfect read for me has well fleshed out characters that I love/am sympathetic to or can grow to love. There needs to be some humor, good dialogue, credible conflict as well as credible development of relationships, solid plot with no holes. Oh, and I want all of this with at least some element of romance.

The perfect read for me is a book that sucks you in as soon as you start to read it. When reading your mind starts to anticipate what comes next and you cant wait to see what the next page brings. But the best thing about a perfect read is that once you finish the book you can sit down and read it again and enjoy it as much as you did the first time around. A perfect read for me is a book that leaves you with a different perspective to what you had before reading and leaves you the ability to mull over different chapters and characters even when not reading.
I have moved away from straight romances, I was just finding them to formulatic. I like to read something a bit different. Fantasy, sci-fi, historical, you name it. The only thing a book needs to have is something that sets off a hum in my head and I have to read it. An example of this would be the Edward Rutherford books who writes historical fiction

My favorite reads are generally romances, but "perfect" ones are few and far between. More often than not it seems romances all have the same hero and heroine, so I've been reading more action-geared books and paranormals. Lord of the Fading Lands and Lady of Light and Shadows were breaths of fresh air and simply two of the best books I've read in a long, long time. I couldn't put them down, so I stayed up late reading on school nights :) The fresh plot, edge-of-your-seat action, rich culture and backstory, and characters and settings so real I could almost reach out and touch them- to me these qualities constitute a perfect read. I have been eagerly awaiting King of Sword and Sky, I'm so glad it's just a few more days!

I love detail, descriptions that lead the imagination where the writer wants it to go. I want to read something that will make me laugh, cry and many emotions in between. A perfect read can be many things to me, but the most common characteristic is that I never want to put the book down. Often, this means intricate story lines, and well-developed characters and settings.

My favorite theme would have to be a paranormal background. I love having that little spark of magic and mystique. It just adds to that special feeling created only by romance novels.

I prefer romantic SF or fantasy. Pure romance is generally (not always!) too character-centered and light on plotting and world-building.

My perfect read is the heady combination of great writing, interesting, likable characters, unusual plot and good (but not too complicated) world-building. Basically I'm describing books by two of my favorite authors: Lois Bujold and Martha Wells.

The perfect read for me has everything that I find important in a book: Involving characters that I really care about, the right mix of action, emotions, relationships and plot, no drudging through pointless historical background unless it pertains directly to the story-and the key to it all is intelligent prose. It can be a great story, but if there is poor writing or poor research of the topics involved, then it is a flop.

There are so many "perfect reads" for me that I really don't know how to sum it up into one thing. I like paranormal, fantasy, adventure...something that is from a completely different world from the one we live in. Granted, I like reading about "normal" people and "normal" day to day things, but nothing gets my heart pumping like a good fantasy book. It's a sweet escape from the everyday world.

I love a tortured, very alpha hero. The heroine has to be able to complement him in temperament and outlook, keep him in line, so to speak. And when he falls for her, he has to fall hard, he's hit before he knows it. I love medieval times and I love Highlanders. I want emotion in my perfect read. Lots of it. And not just anger and whatnot for conflict. I want joy and happiness to go along with the sadness. And great love scenes, romantic love scenes. Give me most of this and I'll be happy with most storylines worked around it all!

Perfect read for me would be as the heroine & hero get to know each other I not only get to know the characters but experience through the H/H eyes what their perception is of each other. Their reactions and feelings towards each other.

Also, I want to be enveloped in the story. To have the feeling that I'm there right in the scene watching everything as the story unfolds. A fly on the wall so to speak.

A perfect read is one that I can't put down but I will notice that the last 50 or so pages I tend to slow down my reading because as much as I want to know what happens I don't want the story to end.

Romance in the forefront is a requirement for me to read it. A world of great detail that I can drown in. characters with rich development that keep me turning the pages. And finally a intricate web of original plot lines that make it so I can't put it down. Yeah, thats the ticket. These books are like candy to me. A match made in heaven. :)

For me the perfect read has interesting characters beside just the main hero & heroine. Sometimes a book will use up all the flavor & special spices on the two main characters and the supporting characters are left to being tasteless mush. That's something I really love about your books, they're just so chock full of interesting characters. Everytime you turn a page you're greeted with fully fleshed out characters that make you excited to keep reading & find out what they're up to.

I also love when a character has good non-sexual relationships with characters in a book (like Ellie with Bel & Gaelen) or when characters have friendships/bondings with people outside the main couple/characters (like Kieren & Kiel's relationship with the twins). It just makes the story that much richer to me.

My idea of the perfect read is quite simply a book that I cannot put down. It grabs me from page one and I can't think of anything else until I have reached the end. I have lost many hours of sleep with books such as those. :)

King of sword and sky has just arrived!!!!! Need to finish lady first and just now I need to prepare for my studyday tomorrow. Argh!!!!

How come they can send before the publicationdate? When I worked in the bookstore the rules about publication dates were pretty strict.

Thanks everyone! I've loved reading your posts again (as usual). Most of us agree that, no matter what the subject, the "perfect read" is a book that grabs our emotions and won't let us go.
