This is my favorite poem from "Lady of Light and Shadows".
"Farewell, dear brave and valiant soul, take flight on gilded wing,
Soar high and laugh upon the wind,
while songs of honor sing
Til once again the Gold Horn sounds, your soul to battle calls,
Resplendent blaze of hallowed flame, to triumph over all."
Farewell, Brave Soul a Fey Warrior's Lament.
It seizes my heart every time I read it. I have it typed out and hanging on the wall above my desk.
Ohh, my favorite is the lyrics of the song they sing while unwrapping presents - 10 Thousand Warriors, I think it was?
I have a very afwull confession to make. The poetry is my least favorite bit of the story. That is not your fault I have that in more novels in which poetry is used. I tend to skip over it. Don't know why because I do like reading some poetry. I guess it is just the mix with prose that just doesn't do it for me.
thank you for your kind words from yesterday!
My favorite comes from LADY.
"Though once with joy our garden greened
Love's blossoms fade round salted spring
My heart is lost, my hope is gone
And sorrow now my only song."
- Sorrow's Garden, a lament by Mara vol Elias
I had to have my 20 year old Siamese put to sleep a month before LADY was released and I cried over and over reading this lament. It described exactly how I felt at the time.
Mel K.
That's easy, Cheryl!
"Miora felah ti'Feyreisa!" Bel, Gaelen, Rain, and others...
(thanks for letting us have an out, I reaaaaaaaalllly wish I had my books now...) :(
Congrats to the Winners! WOW 91 post yesterday!!! I agree with Lauren, my favorite was the song they sang while unwrapping the presents. (I'm at work and don't have my books with me to confirm the name....sorry!)
My favorite is a poem from "Lord of the Fading Lands"
My beloved is the sun
And I am the earth that thrives only in her warmth.
My beloved is the rain
And I am the grass that thirsts for her quenching kiss.
My beloved is the wind
And I am the wings that soar when she fills me with her gentle strength.
My beloved is the rock
Upon which rests the happiness of all my days.
~The Elements of Love, by Aileron v'En Kavali of the Fey
To be loved like that ~ beautiful.
My favorite poem/song is Ten Thousand Swords from LoFL.
Ten thousand swords before you, ten thousand daggers drawn,
Ten thousand lives defend you, ten thousand warriors strong,
Our blood will spill ten thousand times.
In hope, ten thousand sigh.
For love we face ten thousand deaths,
With joy, ten thousand die.
Ten thousand Fey before you, ten thousand fierce and tall,
Ten thousand souls protect you, beloved of us all.
Question Cheryl: How long did it take to write this poem?
Janet
One of my favorite quotes is "When one of your dreams come true, you begin to look at the others more carefully." - anon
"Ten thousand swords before you, ten thousand daggers drawn,
Ten thousand lives defend you, ten thousand warriors strong.
Our blood will spill ten thousand times.
In hope,ten thousand sigh.
For love we face ten thousand death,
With death, ten thousand die.
Ten thousand Fey before you, ten thousand fierce and tall,
Ten thousand souls protect you, beloved of us all.
-Chorus from Ten Thousand Swords, a Fey Warrior's Song
-C.L. Wilson's Lord of the Fading Lands
Like lauren, I like the chorus from Ten Thousand Swords.
I have to say, however, that would sound like poetry to me if someone said "Your soul calls out. Mine answers, beloved".
This is a hard one. I swap my books and I don't have them anymore. My memory isn't that great! I do love the use of poetry at the beginning of the chapters, also the use of song in the story. It adds a certain uniqueness to the books!
Since you said we could use lines from the book as well one of my favorites is when Rain says in Lady of Light and Shadows:
"My heart has followed where my soul has led."
I had been waiting for that! For Rain to love Ellie with not just his soul but his whole heart. It was a wonderful moment.
And to sneak in another line here's one from Lord of the Fading Lands:
"They stood there by the Velpin for many long, silent chimes, the woodcarver's daughter and the man who had almost once destroyed the world, the man whose face was now drawn in lines of mingled joy and anguish."
It really gives you that fairytale feeling.
My absolute favorite... Well, it isn't really part of the poetry, I don't think, but I love the saying that the Fey warriors have; it's something about... Oh, gosh, I don't have my book with me. But it's the saying about "something something today, for tomorrow we die." I really should commit that to memory, shouldn't I?
But yeah, that's my favorite saying from the books. I do also love the Ten Thousand Swords, too.
That's so awful, I don't even know my favorite saying! Shame on me. ^^;
My favorite is a toss up between The Tairen's Lament, Fey Nursery Rhyme from Lord of the Fading Lands and the Magecraft Seeking Spell from Lord of the Fading Lands. I have several favorites of Lady of Light and Shadows as well but the two above are my absolute favorites.
Caitlin
My favortie poem from these books actually is one of the winners of the poetry contest, Eternal Song, by Arabella Hancock. The final verse I find so moving.
"I watch while you sleep in the quiet of night, I am shining from stars I am brillant and bright, I await the time for our journey to begin, Our souls reunite and as one we will sing."
I think that anyone who had ever lost someone can find comfort in the promise of a future reunion.
Maybe you would not consider this poetry, but every time one of the mate pairs would join in love, it was poetry to me. The most poignant was this scene between Shan and Elfeya:
"With a low cry, the sound of a soul in torment, Elfeya flung herself forward, racing across the room to the imprisoned man. She grabbed his face between hands that trembled. Tears rained down her face, falling upon his lean cheeks and merging with the answering tears that streamed from the corners of his eyes. Her flame-colored hair spilled across his chest like liquid fire. She kissed him with frantic, helpless need and sobbed into his mouth, "Ver reisa ku'chae. Kem surah, shei'tan. Kem surah."
AmandaB - that really means a lot to me. :)
Lauren - 10,000 Swords...and that's one of my favorites, too. *g*
Mieke - lol, it's quite alright.
Meljprincess - I'm touched that it connected with you. The poem was intended to be a lament for a doomed shei'tanitsa bond, which is one of the worst forms of sorrow I could imagine. I'm glad I got the emotion of deep loss across. :)
Maya - lol! I've been alternating between book question / non-book question each day, but when it came to quotes...I figured I'd better broaden the field!
Janet - The poetry (for the most part) takes the longest word-per-word of anything I write. Ten Thousand Swords came mostly easily, but I tweaked it for months trying to get just the right words and rhythm!
Bek - I love that quote. Never heard it before, but its good.
Alicat - I keep trying to get my husband to say that, but all he says is "Where's my dinner?" LOL.
Discodancingrobot - "My heart has followed where my soul has led" was my friend Diana P's favorite line. It was in a different scene in the first version of the book, but I moved it up to where it is now for publication s the other scene doesn't happen until QUEEN. :)
Haley - Live well, love deep. Tomorrow we die. Or, in Feyan, Mei felani. Beis santi. Nehtah, bas desrali. :) (I have a mind like steel sieve - lol - but I've read my books so many times I remember almost every line. Oi!)
Caitlin Hoy - I love the nursery rhyme. It was the first one I wrote. I tried to capture the feeling of joy and majesty of the tairen, and the sorrow a mother would have to secretly feel knowing her son would never have a truemate.
Jetty - oh, I'm so glad you said that. I have never been so thrilled as when so many people turned in so many spectacular poems for the inaugural poetry contest.
I like the first on Lord of the Fading Lands;
Loudly, proudly, tairen sing,
As they soar on mighty wings,
Softly, sadly, mothers cry,
To sing a tairen's lullabye
*sigh*
Again, it's hard to pick just one since I enjoyed all of them so much! They all added an extra depth and authenticity to the books as well as giving us another insight into Fey (and Mage) history.
But,if I had to pick just one from Lord, it would be the "Ten Thousand Swords", which begins one of my favourite scenes in Lord when Rain, Ellie and her quintet are unwrapping wedding gifts and Ellie learns more about sheitanis.
In Lady, I really enjoyed "Farewell, Brave Soul, a Fey Warrior's lament". I thought it added just the right amount of poignancy to the ending and a fitting tribute to the Fey (and Lauriana) who had been killed at the cathedral earlier. Very touching!
My favorite Fey quote from the books has to be "The great sun rises in your eyes, beloved." To me it served as a sign of the continuing love between Elfeya and Shannisorran; and although it was simple, it was indeed quite beautiful.
On of my favourite quote is From Lord of the fading lands-
"Ten thousand swords before you, ten thousand daggers drawn,
Ten thousand lives defend you, ten thousand warriors strong.
Our blood will spill ten thousand times.
In hope ten thousand sigh,
for love we face ten thousand deaths
with joy,ten thousand die
ten thousand Fey before you, ten thousand fierce and tall,
Ten thousand souls protect you, beloved of us all.
-Ten Thousand swords
i have always loved when they shout miorah felah ti'feireisa! Always makes me go woo hoo!!!!
I fear like others here, as I alluded to yesterday. 10,000 Swords is my favorite poetry.
Chorus from Ten Thousand Swords, a Fey Warrior's Song
It has actually stuck with me where others did not. Also, it reminds me a great deal (I have no clue why) to C.J.Cherryhs' series "The Faded Sun" Perhaps it is a similar deep spiritual stoicism of the characters. All that said, it is a wonderful "song" and it was very difficult to pick a favorite out of so many.
I know this is horrible, but I'm not big on poetry. I don't read it. I really think some people just get poetry and others don't. I'm one of the others.
Although, I really liked the song they sing to Ellie.
Love your books!! I'm super excited about King!!
opps so I just posted under my friends account ... Gabazlee = Jackie/Trulywonderful =)
Two poems really caught my eye. The first was The Elements of Love. It's such a beautiful poem! Every woman should be so lucky to find that kind of love. The second poem that I love is Ten Thousand Swords. Wow--just beautiful, inspiring poems that make a great addition to the story that is being unfolded before us.
Hey guys! Ya'll are so good with the poetry! I hate to use the same thing as everyone else, so since I am reading Lord again for the umpteenth time, I decided to use the last quote of the book....
"I will stay with you for eternity, if you allow it, she'tani."
*sighs* I mean really, who doesn't want their man to stay with them for eternity or at least say that he does.....I loves me some Rain. I REALLY like when Rain sings that "Tairen Song" to Ellie and he and she both realize they are each others soul mates and he cries for the first time in 1000 years, yep...not ashamed to say that I was crying with him!
Hi, I love the poetry in this and the poem from Lord of Fading Lands is so beautiful and romantic, I was lost in the feelings it evoked. :)I look forward to seeing what poetry is included in the next book.
Raine Delight
I cant choose a favorite from the poems. I love them all. They convey the emotion and either make me feel warm with delight or like in the case of the Feraz witch spell make a shiver run down my spine. I'll stick with a line "Ku shalah aiyah to nei, she'tani" bid me yes or no. For the most powerful fey to whisper this to his mate, shows the strength of the mate bond. Even with all the power he has to command, Ellie's word is law over him and he was asking for her consent rather than taking it.
Bek
I am so excited for the release of King! I wish the mail was more reliable here in Iraq, because I'm headed home soon and don't want to risk missing it because the mail got held up for weather :( I guess I'll just have to reread the copies of Lord and Lady that I have with me!
I couldn't choose a favorite poem from the books! There are so many that touch my heart!
I know it was the first in the first book, but it is still my favorite. It touches something in me.
Loudly, proudly, tairen sing,
As they soar on mighty wings
Softly, sadly, mothers cry
To sing a tairen’s lullabye
The Tairen’s Lament, Fey Nursery Rhyme
**Patty**
I live
I fight
I bleed
I die
For love
I am Fey.
It's very simple but it seems to encompass the entire way of life of the Fey.
Fading Lands are calling me home and 6 days is verrry long indeed
Loudly, proudly, Tairen sing,
As they soar on mighty wings.
Softly, sadly, mothers cry
To sing a Tairen's lullabye...
Does it get any better than that?
Those 4 lines hooked me instantly.
And haunt me still...
I don't have either of the books with me right now, but my favorite poetry/line is when a Fey finds his truemate and says "Your soul calls out. Mine answers beloved." I'm not sure if you really consider that poetry but it's heart wrenching to me. (Especially when Adrial finds his truemate and there's so much emotion going on between the two of them and Elly crys because she can feel their hurt and pain).
Well, it's not one of the poems or songs, but it sounded like poetry to me and it stuck with me. I like the euphemism for I love you that was used: "The Great Sun rises in your eyes." I just thought it was kind of different and sweet.
My favorite quote is-
Live well
love deep
tomorrow we die
Such a simple quote but means so much. You never know what will happen next so live to the fullest. This quote really gets me
You know, I wasn't a big fan of poetry in my books until I read Lord of the Fading Lands! Now I'm a convert. I love the tairen, so here's my favorite, right off the bat:
Loudly, proudly, tairen sing,
As they soar on mighty wings,
Softly, sadly, mothers cry,
To sing a tairen's lullabye
~The Tairen's Lament, Fey Nursery Rhyme
Cpl S Williams - thank you for your service in Iraq! I'm sure you will be glad to be home, and I know your family and friends will be joyously awaiting your safe return. Sounds like you're coming home soon :). Safe journey.
Bek, Coolbreeze, bittybye, patricia, TrulyWonderful Jackie*g*, and everyone else, thanks ya'll. I've said it every day, but reading these posts is such a delight. I've had the best week, thanks to all of you participating on the blog. :)
Anyone who isn't posting just because you can't pick a quote...post anyways just to say hey. you'll still be entered in the drawing. The QoD is mostly just to give people something to post about.
cheers
Cheryl
The poem that came to mind was the one from chapter 1 of Lady of Light and Shadows:
I dream of wing and fang and pride,
I dream of venom swift and sure.
I dream of song and cloud and sky, I dream of flame that scorches pure.
I dream of dancing crystal winds, as high aloft I soar.
I dream of enemies and prey that flee my fiery roar.
I actually really loved the very first one in Lord of the Fading Lands.
Loudly, Proudly, tairen sing,
As they soar on Mighty Wings.
Softly, sadly, mothers cry
To sing a Tairen's Lullaby.
This was cute and a great way to start off the book. :)
My favorite, like many of the others is the 10,000 Swords.
Ten thousand swords before you, ten thousand daggers drawn,
Ten thousand lives defend you, ten thousand warriors strong.
Our blood will spill ten thousand times.
In hope, ten thousand sigh.
For love we face ten thousand deaths,
With joy, ten thousand die.
Ten thousand Fey before you, ten thousand fierce and tall,
Ten thousand souls protect you, beloved of us all.
“Ten Thousand Swords”, a Fey Warrior's Song
Such a potent song. It shows a strength and unflinching faith. The whole scene when they explain the meaning of it to Elly was amazing, beautifully detailed. It really brought a depth to the Fey warriors and her quintet, especially.
My other favorite is “I am Fey”
I live
I fight
I bleed
I die
for love.
I am Fey
“I am Fey”, a warrior’s poem by Evanaris vel Bahr
This seems to sum up the fey males, they will live and sacrifice even their lives for love. What a powerful ideal and honorable principle.
My two favorites would have to be The Elements of Love and I am Fey. Both show just how strongly love is the beginning and the end. How love is everything and without it there is nothing.
My favorite was Ten Thousand Swords. Obviously, this has been popular today!
September 30th is not coming quickly enough!!!
This is so playful and carefree, I love it.
"With wings unfurled and joy unbound,
I dance on laughter-spangled winds.
I bathe in freedom's rushing breath
And drink cool nectar from the clouds.
Up, up, through sunlit fields of blue,
I soar through boundless ether.
Look! Starlight shines at height of day.
I hear infinity calling.
-"Tairen's Flight"
The words capture the joy of being a Tairen perfectly.
My favorite poem is also "Live well. Love deep. Tomorrow, we die."
Knowing what Ellie's parents have endured to keep her safe speaks much of their love for their child. Even Ellie's adopted mother gave her life to keep Ellie safe.
I can't wait for King of Sword and Sky. I just finished re-reading Lord of the Fading Lands and Lady of light and Shadows. I am all ready to go. I'm so excited!
10 Thousand Swords, without a doubt.
Without a doubt my favorite is "The Elements of Love".
Because of this line:
My beloved is the rock
Upon which rests the happiness of all my days.
Sadly my books have yet to join me on campus. But of course I love the simple and eloquent quote, "Your soul calls out, mine answers Beloved." Please forgive me if I've misquoted.
I am so glad we're allowed a line from the book because I honestly don't remember any of the poetry :(. That said, I absolutely adore the Truemate claiming words: "Your soul cries out. Mine answers, beloved." That is absolutely beautiful and I wish I could remember what it is in Feyan.
Like so many before me, I love the 10,000 Swords song. It just brings to mind a picture of thousands of warriors on the battlefield right before the fighting begins, waiting, weapons ready, mist on the ground, willing to die if need be, but standing bravely anyway. I love the way you wrote the battle scenes in King. I usually skip over stuff like that because I can't really see it in my mind's eye, but I didn't skip this time. I couldn't stand to miss anything. Looking forward to D-Day!
Finished rereading Lord and starting rereading lady today. And to my surprise I had an email that my belgian bookshop is already sending my copy!!!!! That is earlier then expected. So need to get a move on with reading, And I need to prepare for a studyday on saturday. That is not easy LOL
There were so many beautiful poems that had a lot of meaning to me but sometimes its just something written simply with meaning that captivates me. So one of my favorite poems was "I am Fey" by Evanaris vel Bahr
I live
I fight
I bleed
I die
for love.
I am Fey
My favourite is the Ten Thousand Swords, too. The imagery this poem brings to mind is awesome!
Ten Thousand Swords is also one of my favorites.
Finally, King of Sword and Sky showed up in my mailbox from Dorchester, can't wait to start reading tonight after I fnish all those have-to-do things!
Thanks for your posts everyone. Look for today's winner on the T -5 blog!
Only 5 more days!!! Wheeeeee!
cheers
Cheryl
